フィリピン留学で学ぶMBAの英語（12）Decision Modeling & Analysis
日本人講師KG今日は、私がMBAの中で一番苦労したモジュール、Decision Modeling & Analysisについて。
ざっくり言うと、意思決定には正しいデータ（数字）が必要。そして、その正しい数字は正しい方法を知らないと導き出せないので、それをしっかり勉強しましょうというのがこのモジュールの主題。要は、数学的考え方のトレーニングです。確率と統計です。
私は文系人間ですが、数学や物理も結構得意だったので最終的には何とかなりましたが、かなりしんどかったです。MBAには結構理系の学生が多く彼らが大活躍したモジュールでしたが、「日本人の数学力」がやはり相対的に高いという事実を肌で実感できた機会でもありました（皆さん、自信を持ちましょう！）。
ただ、40歳を過ぎて人生で初めて英語で微分積分を勉強させられたのには難儀しました。。。
（私は文系だったので高校では習わなかったのです）
全く知らない概念を英語で説明されても全然頭に入ってこないこと、を初めて体験しました。MBAは基本的にビジネスに関することばかりなので、多少英語が分からなくても知識と経験で何とか埋めあわせることができるのですが、微分積分ではそれができないのです。そこで、MBA期間中初めて日本語のサイトで調べたのですが、日本語で読んでも中々理解できなかったので、「自分の英語力のせいではない」と勝手に総括してコツコツと勉強を進めていったのを覚えています（原因は脳の老化？）。
それでは、ひとつだけ事例をご紹介します。製造業での生産コストと在庫の最適化に関するお題です。頭の運動にご活用下さい！
＜問題＞
A. A company purchases a component used in the manufacture of generators directly from the supplier. The manufacturing operation that is operated at a constant rate requires 1000 components per month throughout the year. Assuming that the fixed cost of placing and receiving an order are £25 per order, unit cost is £2.50 per component and annual inventory costs are charged at 20%, find:
(i) The EOQ for the components
(ii) The time between replenishments
(iii) The total annual inventory costs associated with the recommended order quantity.
B. Assuming 250 days of operation per year, and a lead time of five days, what is the stock level at which the component should be reordered?
C. Suppose that the management of the company decides to order the components in quantities of 1000 units, and ordering once each month. How much more expensive would this policy be than the EOQ recommendation and what would the stock level reorder point be? Which policy would you recommend?
＜回答＞
A. (i) annual demand D = 12 * 1000, therefore Q* = 1095
(ii) Cycle time = Q /D years = 12Q /D months = 1.095
(iii) T = 547.72
B. Quantity used in 1 day = D/250
Quantity used in 5 day = 240
C. When Q = 1000, total cost = £550, increase in cost = 550-547.72 = £2.28
Reorder point would not change since lead-time is the same
Convenience of regular monthly orders out weighs extra cost.
