ハーバード大学に合格した高校生のエッセイ（小論文）の原文を読み解いてみる（３）

 

前回の続き。

 

 

第３段落も、依然としてネガティブな幼少期を綴っていますが、後半でようやくブレークスルーの萌芽が感じられます。

 

まずは全文。

 

“Entering high school, I would spend hours at a time thinking about my insecurity and talking through memories of my mom with my dad. During this time, I would always remember how I had stared numbly into the ripples of my dad’s shirt as a fifth grader. I could never forget that feeling of helplessness, but with repeated reflection, I began to understand this moment in a different way. Given her circumstances — raised by an abusive, alcoholic father and a neglectful mother; involved in several dysfunctional relationships with controlling men; drinking to numb the injustices of life, but then realizing it was too late to stop — I have no way of knowing if my life would be any different from hers.

 

 

 

では、個別に見ていきましょう

“Entering high school, I would spend hours at a time thinking about my insecurity and talking through memories of my mom with my dad.

高校に入ってからも、自分の不安について考えることを止められず、母親の思い出について父と語り合った。

 

Entering high school, これは文法的には「分詞構文」というやつですね。

would 、ここでは「過去の習慣」を表します。細かい違いがあるそうですが、基本used to と同じ意味です。
Macmillan Dictionary にもこのように記載されています　→　used for saying what someone used to do in the past

 

 

 

During this time, I would always remember how I had stared numbly into the ripples of my dad’s shirt as a fifth grader.

そんなときには必ず、父のシャツに顔をうずめて泣いていた5年生のあの日を思い出した。

 

I had stared numbly into the ripples of my dad’s shirtの部分を直訳すると、

「私は、父のシャツのさざ波をぼんやりとじっと見つめていた」

第一パラグラフの、「父の胸に顔をうずめて泣いていたとき、そこから感じるやわらかな鼓動がほんの少しだけ慰めになった」という部分を受けており、この情報がないと何を言っているのかわかりません。

numbly、 形容詞numb「かじかんだ、感覚を失った」の副詞

ripple、 さざ波、波紋

 

 

 

I could never forget that feeling of helplessness, but with repeated reflection, I began to understand this moment in a different way.

あのときの無力感は忘れられないが、何度も思い返すうちに、違った捉え方をするようになった。

 

feeling of helplessness　「無力感」

with repeated reflection　「何度も思い返すうち」　こういう言い回し好きです

understand …in a different way　「…を違った捉えかたをする」

 

 

 

Given her circumstances — raised by an abusive, alcoholic father and a neglectful mother; involved in several dysfunctional relationships with controlling men; drinking to numb the injustices of life, but then realizing it was too late to stop

もし自分が、母親のような境遇で育っていたら ーー 。アルコール依存症で虐待を繰り返す父親と無関心な母親に育てられ、支配欲の強い男性たちと異常な関わりを続け、不公平感を紛らわすために深酒し、気づいたときには自分で自分を止められなくなっていた

 

Given her circumstances　「彼女の（と同じ）境遇を与えられたら」

文頭のgivenは、「もし…を与えられたら」くらいの理解で良いでしょう

abusive 、動詞abuse「虐待する」の形容詞

neglectful、動詞neglect「無視する、軽視する」の形容詞

dysfunctional relationships　「異常な関わり」　dysfunctionalは、functionalの否定形

controlling men　「支配欲の強い男性たち」

numb the injustices of life　「不公平感を紛らわす」numbは動詞で「感覚を失わせる」といった意味

realizing it was too late to stop　気づいたときには自分で自分を止められなくなっていた、  realize = understand

 

 

 

I have no way of knowing if my life would be any different from hers. 

自分があの母親だったならば、彼女とは少しは違った人生を送ることができていただろうか。そんなことは知る由もないが。

 

I have no way of …ing　「…する方法（術）がない」」

 

 

 

ようやく母親を「受け入れること」で、気持ちに変化が現れてきましたね。

英語学習の観点からも、「さすが！」という表現が満載ですね。決して難解ではない単語を上手に使っています。すっごく勉強になりました。
