ハーバード大学に合格した高校生のエッセイ（小論文）の原文を読み解いてみる（２）

 

前回の続き。

 

 

今回は第２パラグラフ。

第１位段落に続き、ここでも幼少時代の苦難を生々しく語っています。

 

まずは段落全体をご紹介し、その後一文ずつ解説していきます。

 

I had always been shy as a kid and the absence of my mom exacerbated this problem as I tried to unhealthily suppress my insecurities and fill her absence with others’ approval. In sixth grade, I constantly sought the attention of a group of kids who, in turn, bullied me. Consequently, when I switched schools going into seventh grade, I was shy and timid, afraid to engage with new people. I pictured myself near the bottom of a rigid social hierarchy. The next year, I started to branch out more, but inside, I remained obsessed with how others perceived me.

子供のころの自分は引っ込み思案で、母親の不在がそれに拍車をかけた。人から受け入れられることで、母親の存在を補い、不自然に不安を押し込めていた。

 

 

shy  恥ずかしい、引っ込み思案な

the absence of my mom　母の不在

exacerbate （状況等を）悪化させる

unhealthily 不健全に

suppress 抑える

insecurities　これはsecurityの反対ですね

fill 満たす

other’s approval  他人の受け入れ（他人が自分を受け入れること）

 

文法や構文はたいして難しくありませんが、いくつか難しい単語が使われています。

 

 

 

In sixth grade, I constantly sought the attention of a group of kids who, in turn, bullied me.

6年生のとき、友達の気を引こうと努力したが、結局グループでいじめられた。

 

constantly 　コンスタントに　　和製英語の意味で捉えて大丈夫です

seek 　探し求める

attention　 注意

bully 　いじめる

in turn

「順番に」のような訳が辞書にはありますが、ここでは「結果として」といった意味合い。このin turnの解釈がこの文の肝ですね。

 

 

 

Consequently, when I switched schools going into seventh grade, I was shy and timid, afraid to engage with new people.

7年生で学校を変わったときには、新しい人たちと関わるのが怖くなっていた。

 

consequently　結果として

switch　スイッチする、変える

timid 　臆病な

engage in　 〜に携わる

 

 

 

I pictured myself near the bottom of a rigid social hierarchy.

自分が、変えられない社会階層の底辺にいるように感じていた。

 

 

picture 　ここでは動詞として使われており、意味はimagineと同じです。

bottom　底辺

rigid 　変え難い、厳格な

social hierarchy　 社会階層　読み方は「ヒエラルキー」ではなく「ハイエラルキー」です（豆）

 

この文は、pictureの理解にかかっていますね。

 

 

 

The next year, I started to branch out more, but inside, I remained obsessed with how others perceived me.

次の年には活動範囲を広げられるようになったが、自分が他人にどう見られているのか、いつもびくびくしていた。

 

branch out 　新しいことを始める

obsessed with　 〜に心を奪われている、取り憑かれている

how others perceived me　他の人が自分をどう感じているか

 

ここでは、obsessed withがポイントですね。実は、私は結構この単語を使います。obsessed with qualityで「品質にこだわる」と言った意味になります。

 

 

いかがでしたか？

少々難しいですが、カタマリでそのまま覚えたいフレーズが幾つかありますね。

 

 

第３パラグラフでようやく「変化」が表れます。

小さな足がかり、といった感じのものですが。。。
