前回の続き。

 

 

まずは第４パラグラフ全文。

 

“For the first time, I began to understand an idea that has since granted me freedom: I cannot walk in my mom’s shoes, and thus, no one else can truly walk in mine. The way others perceive me is inherently inaccurate, so I do not need to concern myself with what others think. This realization provided me the freedom to become untethered from the approval of others, finally at ease with myself.

 

さて、個別に見ていきましょう。

 

 

For the first time, I began to understand an idea that has since granted me freedom:
そのとき初めて、こう考えられるようになった。

 

上記の翻訳者の訳で十分だと思いますが、私なりに解説を加えてみます。

I began to understand an ideaで、私はある考えを理解できるようになった

that has since granted me freedom:　その考えは、それ以降私に自由を与えてくれた。

thatはan ideaを先行詞とする関係代名詞

since、ここでは副詞

grantの意味はgiveに近い。辞書では、to allow someone to have or do what they wantとあります。

文末の;（セミコロン）を見つけた時点で、次の文章が「ある考え」を具体的に説明してくれるのだと理解できます。;はそういう役割です。

 

 

I cannot walk in my mom’s shoes, and thus, no one else can truly walk in mine.
自分は母の靴を履いて歩くことはできない。誰も自分の靴を履いて歩くことはできない。

この文は特に解説は要りませんね。

 

 

The way others perceive me is inherently inaccurate, so I do not need to concern myself with what others think
人が自分をどう理解していようと、それは基本的には正確ではなく、他人の目に映る自分の姿まで心配する必要はないということだ。

concern 心配する

what others think 他人が考えること

 

 

This realization provided me the freedom to become untethered from the approval of others, finally at ease with myself.
この気づきが自分に自由を与え、ようやく自分自身でいることが楽になった。

 

realizationは前回やったrealize=understand の名詞

provide = give

untetheredは、tethered=connectedの反対

以上を用いて前半部分を直訳すると、「この気付きが私に、他人の受け入れに縛られない自由を与えてくれた」といった感じになります。意味は掴めますね。

at ease = confident and relax
文法的には難しいのですが、at easeはbecomeの補語と考えるしかないように思います。意味的な理解は簡単ですが。

 

 

今回は少し短いですが、素晴らしい表現満載ですね。個人的には、This realization provided me ….というフレーズをパクって今後使ってみたいと思います。
