【英作文講座】ハーバード大学に合格した高校生のエッセイの原文を読み解いてみる
日本人講師KGBusiness Insiderで興味深い記事を見つけました。
アメリカの名門大学7校に合格した高校生のエッセイ、その全文
世界最高峰のハーバード大学を含むアイビーリーグの７校に合格したエッセイ（小論文）の原文が紹介されているというのです。
書いたのは高校生といえどアメリカ人（英語ネイティブ）、更にハーバードに合格する秀才。どんな内容なのか？にも興味を惹かれますが、英語学習者としては「どんな英語を使うのか？」に激しく好奇心を揺さぶられます。
ということで、今日から数回に分けてその原文を読み解いてみたいと思います。参考までに、英語の原文は下記にてお読み頂けます。

第１パラグラフ（英文記事より）
The soft thumping of my dad's heart provided a small degree of solace as I cried with my head on his chest. I was in fifth grade. He had just told me that my mom, having been attacked by her boyfriend, was in the hospital. I remember being surprised with myself, surprised that I would be sad after all she had done. This was the same person who, when I was eight, threw a drunken party at our house for teens younger than I am now. This was the same person who would disappear after spending nights at the bar, the person who went to jail for trying to strangle my dad in an inebriated stupor. She had not been a part of my life for over a year since my dad received sole custody; I thought I had closure, that I was ready to move on. Yet, hot tears still ran down my cheek as I imagined her swollen face and the bruises on her arms.

父の胸に顔をうずめて泣いていたとき、そこから感じるやわらかな鼓動がほんの少しだけ慰めになった。

thumping of the heartで「心臓の鼓動」
provide = give
a small degree of – の直訳は「小さい程度の-」、これで意味は分かりますね
solaceで 「慰め」
as = when
with my head on his chestの解釈は「私の頭を彼の胸につけた状態で」with+目的語+分詞のパターンですね。
I was in fifth grade. He had just told me that my mom, having been attacked by her boyfriend, was in the hospital.
当時、私は小学5年生だった。ボーイフレンドに殴られた母が病院に運ばれた、と父が教えてくれた。
He（父親）は「that以下のこと」を私に話した。
そして、that以下の内容は「ボーイフレンドに殴られた母が病院に運ばれた」こと。
having been attacked by her boyfriendは、いわゆる分詞構文というものですね。ここでは、母親が病院に運ばれた理由を述べています。こうやって、サラリと分詞構文を入れてくるのはさすがですね。
I remember being surprised with myself, surprised that I would be sad after all she had done.
自分を散々な目に合わせた母が不幸な目にあったことに、自分が悲しんでいることに驚いたのを覚えている。
私の英語力が低いのかもしれませんが、この日本語訳には少々違和感があります。私の理解は次の通り。「母親には散々な目にあわされて憎んでいたはずなのに、彼女が殴られて病院に運ばれたと聞くと、そこには悲しんでいる自分がいたこと」に筆者は驚いたのです。
「自分を散々な目に合わせた」は、after all she had doneの意訳です。直訳は「彼女が（私に）した全てのことの後で」ですが、文脈からこういう意味合いになります。

自分が8歳のとき、今の自分よりも若い10代の連中と家で大騒ぎをした母。何日もバーに泊まり込んだ挙句いなくなった母。
酔いつぶれて意識をもうろうとさせながら父を絞め殺そうとして牢屋に入れられた母。
激しい内容ですねww
ここは主に単語の解説をします。
throw a partで、「パーティーを開く」
disappearで,「消える、いなくなる」
go to jailで、「牢屋にいく」
strangleで「首を絞める」
inebriatedで「酔っ払って」
stuporで「朦朧」
*最後の二つの単語は知りませんでした、勉強になります。
This was the same person…という表現は勉強になりました。「あれをしたのも、これをしたのも、同一人物なんだ」というニュアアンス。今度使ってみようと思います。
She had not been a part of my life for over a year since my dad received sole custody; I thought I had closure, that I was ready to move on. Yet, hot tears still ran down my cheek as I imagined her swollen face and the bruises on her arms.
父が単独親権を獲得してから1年以上、自分の人生に彼女は存在しなかった。彼女に悩まされる生活は終わって、全て忘れたつもりだった。それなのに、彼女の腫れた顔や腕のあざを想像すると、熱い涙が頬をつたった。
She had not been a part of my life、直訳は「彼女は私の人生の一部ではなかった」
sole custodyで「単独親権」
I thought I had closure, that I was ready to move on. 直訳は、「私は終わり(closure)を得たと思った。だから、次に進む(move on)準備ができていた(I was ready to)
yet = but
hot tears 熱い涙
ran down my cheek 頬を下る
swollen face 晴れた顔
bruises 傷

第１パラグラフでガツンと読者のハートを掴む素晴らしい出だしですね。幼少期の葛藤が生々しく描かれています。
そして、英語そのものはさすがネイティブって感じです。ボキャブラリーもそうですが、なかなか心憎い言い回しを駆使しています。私自身、すごく勉強になりました。
一つ一つの文章も、短過ぎず長過ぎず、教養をアピールするには丁度良い長さだと思います。たまに、文法力を披露したいのか、やたら長い文章を書く人がいますが（実はフィリピン人のビジネス文書にとても多い）あれはお勧めしません。読み手にとって不親切ですね。書いてる本人も訳分からなくなってる可能性もあります。
